Ok, here's a reasonable person I thought I'd highlight. Wish more were like her! She even included the bounce message for my reference.

"I am subscribed to this list and this is an announcement - let me know
what I'm doing wrong here. Thanks!"

You are not allowed to post to this mailing list, and your message has
been automatically rejected. If you think that your messages are
being rejected in error, contact the mailing list owner at
listname-owner

I wonder if it would help to change that error message (if possible!). Right now, it starts off accusatory ("*YOU* are not allowed!"), doesn't give reasons, and is very blunt without being terribly informative.

Something more like:

"The message you sent was rejected by the mailing list server. The most common reasons for this include: posting from an email account that is not on this mailing list, posting emails that are HTML-only ([include what Outlook calls these emails, because I forget what it is]), and XXX. If you think that this is an error...etc..etc." This reminds people that they need to mail from the right account, etc.

If you figure out how to do this, let me know, because I've been trying to do the same thing. I can manually edit rejections and have a standard one I replace the default with, but I haven't been able to tinker with the bounce messages. Which are extremely useless.

Then again, I've graduated. Why am I still moderating the listservs?

Over here in the cheap seats, we want to see the gory follies of the people who have no clue and write to you. Drama! Whining! Threats!

I'll post a clueless example from my own webpage, if you want to trade.
