In 2000 or so, a huge cargo terminal in Watertown was heavily renovated and turned into a commercial for-rent co-lo data center. I used to drive by and see "space available" signs.

I drove by today, and watched the backhoes clearing the mountains of rubble away. That's right, they knocked the whole damn gigantic thing down to make room for some new project. There's probably about 3 acres of land there.

Wonder how much money the data center lost?

I confess I just don't understand how it can be economical to tear down a (safe/to code) structre and build another one much like it in its place. But it seems to be done all the time.

Now, maybe they're making condos this time. 3 acres of condos can make a lot of money for the owners. A local one is trying to put 70+ units on a lot that size. (shudder)

Yeah, this is going to be condos. Beacon Properties bought it, and there's going to be 300 (!) condos there. (This is the place across from Russo's on Pleasant St, yeah?). It was at one time Quincy Cold Storage. The colo was pretty much always a placeholder.

Overall, I think it will be a good thing, particularly since the town has got the developer commit to significant improvements to Pleasant St., which is a total mess.

Thanks for the link. And I grossly underestimated the land - 13 acres, not 3, since I was always looking at just the street view. Here's hoping the street paving there will get more attention now.

I use feedster.com to create an RSS feed of items that contain the word "Watertown." (This does mean I get to know quite a bit about Watertown New York and Watertown South Dakota. The sacrifices I make for the internets!)
